Measurements of proportions in your drawing by the cheapest and easiest method: Pencil!

"Feeling giving up to reach to the correct proportions in your drawing as compared to your reference?"

Then this method is all for you. This simple and convenient method of measuring the proportions of distant objects is often misunderstood, by applying it to the size of objects,with which it has nothing to do.

It is,therefore,here described.
1. Shut one eye ;
2. hold the pencil,as in Figure, at arm's length;
3. let the end of the pencil come exactly between the eye and any point on the object you wish to measure from ;
4. then let the thumb or first finger move along the pencil as required,till it reaches the point you wish to measure to.
5 Having obtained this measurement, it can now be compared with, or measured into, any other part of the object or picture(being most careful in moving not to bring the hand nearer to the eye), and thus ascertain its proportion.

*In all measurements the pencil should be held at arm's length,and parallel to the plane of the face.
It should always be remembered that these measurements have reference only to the proportions of objects,and not to their size. Figures here shows how the pencil is held when
measuring horizontally and vertically.

That's it. May it help you in your future drawings!
