Ways of holding the pencil

Image
First, Think about your input into a drawing from a psychological and physical point of view. When we start out along the visual creative road, we tend to bring with us a lot of preconceived notions about what a drawing is and how it should be produced. It’s vital for the creative development that you shed these preconceived ideas as quickly as possible, otherwise, they will continually hold you back. Holding the pencil in a traditional way  - this way of holding the pencil for the beginner can be very restricting, as it tends to come with too many preconditions that limit our ability to be more creative. However, holding the pencil in this way is very appropriate for more theoretical and technical drawing where you need more control. Holding the pencil with your fingertips  - this action changes the type of control, and it allows you to make marks that are more tentative. The pencil can also slip quite easily in this position, giving marks that are not acco...

THE DIASCOPE: A cheap and easy to make tool to capture the best view of your landscape to draw!

Image
The ' Diascope ,'as its name implies, in its simplest form, is merely a piece of cardboard or thin wood, with an aperture cut in it through which to view the best parts of a landscape and conceal the remainder. It may be of any size and proportion, but a convenient one may be made with a piece of cardboard, say seven inches by five, or larger, with an opening five inches by three. This opening may be divided at the inches by intersecting threads, perpendicularly and horizontally.   It is a traditionally approved tool for landzcape drawings and when you don't want to use the small digital screen of your mobile or camera and want to draw all with sincerity, it is the best! When a person goes to Nature, and has an extensive view before him, he is often perplexed to know how much, or what part, of what lies before him, he should take as his sketch. Let him with one eye look at the landscape through the ' Diascope ' when held at from six to ten inches from him...

Measurements of proportions in your drawing by the cheapest and easiest method: Pencil!

Image
"Feeling giving up to reach to the correct proportions in your drawing as compared to your reference?" Then this method is all for you. This simple and convenient method of measuring the proportions of distant objects is often misunderstood, by applying it to the size of objects, with which it has nothing to do. It is,therefore, here described. 1. Shut one eye ; 2. hold the pencil,as in Figure, at arm's length; 3. let the end of the pencil come exactly between the eye and any point on the object you wish to measure from ; 4. then let the thumb or first finger move along the pencil as required, till it reaches the point you wish to measure to. 5 Having obtained this measurement, it can now be compared with, or measured into, any other part of the object or picture(being most careful in moving not to bring the hand nearer to the eye), and thus ascertain its proportion. *In all measurements the pencil should be held at arm's length, and parallel to the plan...
